This aero-view print of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & A. E. Downs in 1888. Gettysburg was settled as a crossroads town with interests in trade in the late 1700's and named for local tavern owner Samuel Gettys. The Pennsylvania College was established here in 1832. A railroad between Gettysburg and Hanover was completed in 1858.

The borough is located near the famed battlefield of the American Civil War. By 1888, Gettysburg’s battlefield had 178 monuments dedicated to the fallen.
