Description

View of Ottawa, Franklin County, K.S., 1872 / drawn & published by E. S. Glover.

This colorful bird’s-eye view print of Ottawa, Kansas was drawn and published by E. S. Glover, Strobridge & Co. Lith. in 1872. Ottawa was incorporated in 1864 on the banks of the Marais Des Cygnes River. The town was named county seat of government of Franklin County when Kansas became a territory in 1855.

The Ottawa Indians that resided there made an arrangement with Baptist missionaries, the following year, to donate 20,000 acres of land for the building of Ottawa University. A $40,000 university building opened in 1865, offering tuition-free undergraduate education for members of the Ottawa tribe.

The map, looking south west, shows labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad route. The population is indicated as 4000. It features inset illustrations of the following:

  • Union School (Cost $30,000).
  • Sheldon Hall, H. F. Sheldon, Owner. Ludingion House, J. C. Bowles & M. Topping, Owners.
  • C. W. Hamblins Block. National Bank (New building).
  • Ottawa University (Cost $40,000).
