Salem, West Virginia 1899. Drawn by T. M. Fowler. This reproduction view of Salem, West Virginia was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1899. Salem was founded by members of the Seventh Day Baptist faith. About forty families from Salem, New Jersey built a block house to protect themselves from Indians. They began clearing and cultivating and planned their town calling it New Salem. Families built their cabins around the protective block house and raised crops in surrounding fields using much vigilance. Bottom Billy Davis built a horse mill which was used by all. Two years after this map’s publishing, Salem would suffer a devastating fire, which destroyed much of the north side of Main Street.
