Presented here is the massive spiral galaxy M101 which is often referred to as the Pinwheel Galaxy. This huge spiral disk of stars was taken with the Hubble Space Telescope and is the largest, most detailed image taken of a spiral galaxy using Hubble. At 170,000 light-years across M101 is nearly twice the diameter of the Milky Way galaxy. It is estimated to contain nearly 1 trillion stars.
Newly formed stars and large swaths of star-forming nebulae that compose the arms of this giant spiral disk provide soothing light blue hues. Perfect for the astronomy buff or anyone with a fascination of the universe we live in.
