Historic Map - Bartlesville, OK - 1917
Description
This bird’s-eye view print of Bartlesville, Oklahoma was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by Fowler & Kelly in 1917. Bartlesville’s beginnings as a quiet farming community, changed drastically in 1897, when the first commercial oil-well in Oklahoma was discovered there.
The well, known as Nellie Johnstone No. 1, attracted many speculators to the area, which enabled the region to become a major producer of crude oil, and Bartlesville to become a major transportation center for the valuable fuel.
Large investments in the area were carried out in the financial institutions of Bartlesville. Phillips Petroleum Company was founded in Bartlesville at the time of this map’s publishing by brothers Frank and L. E. Phillips. The firm, known for its Phillips 66 gasoline, employed 27 at the time. Phillips became ConocoPhillips in 2002.
Bartlesville was also an active junction point for the Santa Fe, and the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroads.
The map includes labeled streets, buildings, railroad route and vicinity.
