View of Statesville, Iredell County, N.C., 1907 / drawn & published by A. E. Downs.

This bird’s-eye view print of Statesville, North Carolina was drawn and published by Albert E. Downs around 1907. When Iredell County was organized in 1788, Statesville was designated as the county’s seat of government.

In the early 1900's, Statesville was an important marketing center for the popular bright-leaf tobacco grown in the region. The popular light tasting tobacco had emerged as the user’s preferred tobacco for the manufacture of cigarettes.

Dairy farming was extensively carried out in the surrounding farmlands. Statesville maintained large distribution facilities for locally grown roots and herbs, as well as distilleries used in the blending of whiskey.

The map includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad route.
